Helpful Tips about your Pets
Seniors should plan for their Pets' future!
As written by Theresa Pettet, a professional pet groomer in Lanark, Ontario. As a dog groomer & founder of a local pet rescue organization dealing mostly with small pets, I was dismayed & upset by a pet owner who had overlooked making provisions for her dog upon her illness & subsequent death.
I have for the past 15 years provided in-home grooming for seniors, disabled clientele, for those who do not drive and also for pets who do not travel well. A senior lady who was the owner of a miniature poodle recently died. Up until a few months ago she maintained her own home & was a valued customer. I read about her death in the local newspaper & being a groomer I immediately worried about the plight of her wee pet.
After many phone calls I was finally put in touch with her closest relatives who informed me that they had been caring for the dog but were looking for a loving permanent home, as they did not wish to keep it.
I was dismayed to learn that the owner had not made provisions in her will for the care of her pet and during her illness had neglected the dog's vaccinations and had not treated an ear infection.
If you are a senior who owns a pet, be it a dog, cat, bird or even a fish please let your lawyer or a close relative know your concerns and wishes (in writing) regarding the future security and wellbeing of such pet(s).
It would also be a good idea to ensure that your veterinarian's phone number, the pet's proper age, feeding requirements (likes & dislikes), habits plus personal possessions (bed, dishes, leash, toys etc.) are listed in writing and filed with your lawyer.
