Pet Hazards
Foods that are poisonous to dogs:
Chocolate: If eaten can cause vomiting, diarrhea, depression, heart arrhythmia, muscle twitching, seizures, and / or coma.
Onions, Garlic & Chives (eaten raw or cooked): Causes toxicity by oxidizing hemoglobin in the red blood cells. ¼ cup can cause illness in a 20-pound dog.
Moldy Cheese: Allergic reactions.
Apple Seeds: Vomiting and / or difficulty breathing.

Pet Poisoning: Fact or Fiction?
FICTION: Silica Gel packets are poisonous to animals.
Silica gel is used to absorb moisture in many products, including some cat litters. If consumed, it generally produces only mild stomach upset. If very large quantities are eaten, it can cause intestinal obstruction - especially in very small animals.
FACT: Macadamia Nuts cause dogs to lose the use of their hind legs.
Dogs that consume roughly one gram of Macadamia nuts or more per pound of body weight can develop loss of coordination, tremors and profound weakness - primarily in the hind legs. These effects usually resolve completely in 24 to 48 hours with minimal management.
FACT: Pennies are poisonous when ingested.
Pennies minted after 1982 contain 99.2 percent zinc (and 0.8 percent copper), which can cause damage to the kidneys, liver, red blood cells and the gastrointestinal tract when ingested in significant amounts.
Beware: Christmas Hazards for Pet
Christmas Tree: Remember that cats climb & dogs can knock it over. Secure it properly and ensure electrical cords are not accessible. Do not add preservatives to the water with real trees.
Decorations: Breakable decorations should not be used. Ribbon, tinsel & evergreen needles can be ingested and lead to gastrointestinal blockages.
Candles & Fire: If you have pets or young children, candles should not be left unattended. Practice caution with open fireplaces.
Toxic Plants: Mistletoe, Holly, Poinsettia, Christmas Rose & Cactus, Lilly, Star of Bethlehem, Yew, Jerusalem Cherry, Hibiscus, Pine & Cedar Greens. All these should be avoided or kept out of the reach of pets & children.
Food: Chocolate is Toxic to animals, the onion family can cause anemia in pets & can be fatal. Turkey & Chicken bones are brittle and can splinter & lodge in an animal's throat or intestine.
