TICKS: A simple walk in the woods or high grass could pose a threat. Yes, there have been reported cases in Ontario! Repellents & daily grooming reduces the risk of your pet contracting Lyme disease. Canine Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused by an organism transmitted when a tick attaches & feeds on your pet.
Symtoms can be arthritis, poor appetite, lethargy & swollen lymph nodes, also joints can become swollen & painful. Your Vet will run blood work and prescribe antibiotic therapy. Early detection & removal of ticks is your best defense along with a good quality flea & tick collar.

GUM (pine or chewing) or TAR: Try rubbing ice cubes to make the gum / tar hard & brittle so you can pick it or cut it off or peanut butter is a good solvent & the pet will love to clean up the area after. Trim the fur around the pads short and this will help prevent foreign material from adhering.
BURRS: Immediate removal is a must before your pet chews or lays on them. Just pull the fur away from around the burr and usually it can be removed intact. Also, a good mink oil conditioner will make burr removal easier as this product causes the coat to be slippery and burrs to come out easier.
FLEAS: Be on the alert all year but especially late summer & fall. Fleas spend 90% of their time off your pet. You may not be able to find a flea on your pet but it's scratching, biting & hair loss are a sure sign that these pests are present. Also look for pepper like black specks near the tail & head. If these specks turn red when wet they indicate that fleas have been feeding on you pet. Every pet in your house is at risk! If you treat one for fleas, treat them all.
